Steven Bochco

Steven Bochco has become a brand name for American quality television in the 1980s and 1990s. Among his many credits, Hill Street Blues earned him several Emmies (for "Outstanding Drama Series" and "Outstanding Writing", among others) and a Golden Globe for "Best Television Drama Series". Later, for 20th Century Fox, Bochco developed another long-running hit, a legal drama called L.A. Law. Steven Bochco has earned himself a reputation for re-inventing the formula of the cop-show with Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. He certainly has introduced a new understanding of television realism, complete with partial nudity and four-letter words, into prime time--despite network Standards and Practices and actual boycotts of advertisers and network affiliates around the country in the case of NYPD Blue. Pat Boone

Pat Boone In the years immediately prior to the British Invasion, only one performer rivaled the chart dominance of Elvis Presley, and that was Pat Boone. With his trademark white buck shoes, perfectly combed hair and gleaming smile, Boone was the very essence of wholesome American values, and at a time when the rise of rock & roll was viewed as a sign of the apocalypse, he made the music appear safe and non-threatening, earning some 38 Top 40 hits in the process. By the 1970s, Boone had shifted almost exclusively to recording gospel material, although he later scored a handful of country hits. In 1983 he began hosting a long-lived contemporary Christian syndicated radio show, all in addition to his extensive charity work. While his recording career continued to taper off, he did issue "Let Me Live," which became an anthem for the anti-choice movement. By and large, Boone spent much of the 1980s and 1990s out of the secular media spotlight, but in 1997 he made a splash with the LP No More Mr. Nice Guy, a tongue-in-cheek collection of covers of heavy metal tunes like "Smoke on the Water" and "Stairway to Heaven." Chuck D Chuck D As the founder of Public Enemy, Chuck D. is one of the most colossal figures in the history of hip-hop, not to mention its most respected intellectual. He redefined hip-hop as music with a message, and his strident radicalism ushered in an era when rap was closely scrutinized for its content. His group's groundbreaking album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was acclaimed by many critics as the greatest hip-hop album of all time, and was instrumental in breaking rap music to white, alternative rock audiences. Billy Connolly Billy Connolly is a world famous comic, an actor on stage, screen, and television, a playwright, and a folk musician. It is as a stand-up comedian that Connolly is best known. His observational humor is idiosyncratic. He talks about himself, who he is, where he's been, what he thinks and how he reacts to the world around him. He has outraged audiences, critics and, of course the media, with his free use of the word fuck. He has used masturbation, blasphemy, defecation, flatulence, sex, his father's illness and his aunts' cruelty to entertain. By exploring these subjects with humor, Connolly has done much to strip away the taboos surrounding them. Yet he does not tell jokes in the conventional way. At the end of a concert the audience can be convulsed with laughter but few can remember a specific "funny" line.

Hunter S. Thompson
Hunter S. Thompson was an integral part of the American journalism machine. He was a social critic, a political junkie, and the father of Gonzo Journalism. He was the spokesman for an entire counterculture in America. Thompson, a child of the drug culture was on hand for almost every landmark event of the '60's and '70's. He ran with the Hell's Angels during their rise to notoriety, he was gassed in Chicago, he protested with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, and he personally covered every presidential election from 1968 to 1992. And surprisingly enough, he lived to put it all on paper. His social criticisms have been insightful, if not a little disturbing. This film is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Thompson.
